Samuel Collins is a sculptor based in Kent, UK. Whilst studying Design & Craft at Brighton University he taught himself to carve stone with help from a local stone cutter. His connection with stone was instant and he began to establish a studio & workshop on the edge of the Dungeness reserve on the Kent coast. Samuel has exhibited works with Francis Gallery, Radford Gallery, Morgans Gallery and Make Hauser & Wirth. His work is featured in private collections across Europe, Asia & the US.
Samuel began carving using reclaimed & scrap stone from yards and quarries throughout the UK, this is something he still incorporates into his practice today, carefully sourcing stones that have often already lived a life or that have stand alone character.
He views these sourcing trips as a main point of inspiration. Abstract gestures, arrangements and unseen movements are worked into stone, with irregularities and imperfections often dictating final form. Samuel’s sculptures often reflect the origins of stone itself, staying sensitive to a sense of memory and history within the material; reference sources vary from Modernist sculpture, Prehistoric structures and Ancient mythology.
Samuel is represented by Francis Gallery.
